Tan & Off-White Pink Flamingo Pillow
The Flamingo
(Phoenicopterus Bahamensis; Keratophyton Dichotomum fuscum)
This is and extremely cool & famous image.
The creator of this image was Mark Catesby—an English naturalist. He was born in 1682 or 1683 and died in 1749.
The colors in the original image have faded and changed enough that it is difficult to judge what colors he had originally intended to use. This is our first product that uses this design. We will probably adjust thread colors a few times until we obtain a balance between what our present image shows, and what Mr. Catesby probably intended. This is a high stitch-count design with many thread color changes.
This illustration is the 73rd illustration came from the book, Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands, Volume 1. There were two volumes. They were published between1729 and 1747—and of course are now in the public domain.
The other images in these 2 volumes are wonderful to look at. You can see them at:

Some of the text that accompanied the plate:
“THIS Bird is two years before it arrives at its perfect colour; and then it is entirely red, except the quill feathers, which are black. A full grown one is of equal weight with a Wild-Duck; and, when it stands erect, is five feet high. The feet are webbed. …
These Birds make their nests on hillocks in the shallow water; on which they fit with their legs extended down, like a man sitting on a stool. The breed on the Coasts of Cuba and the Bahama Islands, and frequent salt-water only. …
This Bird resembles the Heron in shape, excepting the bill, which of very singular form, I shall, in the next Table, give the figure of it in its full size, with a particular description.”
This embroidered design is a custom Embroiderglyph's design with a high stitch count. John digitized the design & Beth created the pillow design. Beth uses great computerized embroidery and sewing machines for the bulk of the work, then hand sews the final side shut. Notice how the each feather in the embroidery almost exactly matches the original. Even the rocks and blades of grass are a close match. Nowadays, artists do not use this style to illustrate wildlife.
This old-world style of illustration gives this embroidered pillow a unique style that will be both eye-catching and conversation worthy.
