Description:

Tan and Cream Three Palms Pillow

This embroidery design is based upon a color plate from a famous naturalist, from a famous book, from an epic voyage of discovery to South America. We hope you enjoy this design on this pillow. What follows is some additional information on this design.

There are three types of palm trees in this design — from left to right:

  • Trithrinax brasiliensis — a slow growing species of quite spiny fan palms native to South America.
  • Orbignia humilis — now referred to as Orbignya — one of four genera of Attalea (or palm).
  • Gulielma insignis — (Peach Palm) which is now called Bactris gasipaes.

The famous naturalist was Alcide Charles Victor Marie Dessalines d'Orbigny (1802–1857).

Alcide d'Orbigny

Alcide D'Orbigny was a French naturalist who made many contributions to science in the fields of: zoology, malacology, palaeontology, geology, archaeology, and anthropology.

He made a famous voyage to South America over the 8-year period from 1826 to 1833. This voyage went to places like Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Argentina, Patagonia, Chili, and Peru. This trip took place during dangerous times. Besides the pirates, there were numerous battles between local militants during his trip.

Upon his return to France — with 9,330 natural history specimens — he published a book that became very famous:

Voyage dans l'Amérique Méridionale le Brésil, la république

This French title translates roughly as: Voyage to the South American Republic of Brazil.

This was more than a mere book. It was published between 1834 and 1847 in 11 volumes. Overall these volumes contained 4,747 pages, 302 color plates and 122 black and white plates. Charles Darwin called this book, “One of the great monuments of science in the 19th century”. In it d'Orbigny described thousands of new species.

This book is now in the public domain. If you would like any of the wonderful graphics from this book digitized, please contact John at Embroiderglyphs. At this time we are planning on digitizing a number of the palm tree plates.
