Cream and Brown Embroidered Banded Butterfly Fish Pillow
This embroidery is a real piece of art. This pillow would fit into a wide range of decors, and would be a great asset for an interior decorator, or for a real estate agent staging a home.
This is our latest high-stitch-count creation, and this brown and cream pillow is our first item with this design.
The original artwork came from a German naturalist. His name was Friedrich Strack. He lived from 1784 to 1852. Between 1819 and 1826, he published a 4 volume set of books called, “Naturgeschichte in Bildern.” This fish comes from volume 4, plate 85, figure 1. This book is now in the public domain.
Strack listed this fish as, ”Lutjanus Verres,” however this does not link to images of fish that look similar. Obviously, that is the Latin name. This type of fish is more commonly known as a, “Banded Butterfly Fish.” There are many types of Banded Butterfly Fish, this is just one type.
This is a very cute fish, however, we don't know if it is supposed to be a male or female. Based on photos of similar fish, we estimate the design is close to the actual size of the fish.
This pillow's size is approximately 12″ x 16″ x 4″.
The front center panel uses light cream/tan upholstery fabric with the embroidered design, and a dark brown fabric on each side of the center panel and on the back. This brown fabric has a soft, suede-like texture. Note the decorative water-like trim on each side of the center panel.
Inside we have used — as always — a new, soft, high quality pillow insert.
The stitches in this design are very dense and have a very tactile feel. Notice how the various colors are interwoven. This design does not take any digitizing shortcuts. Every single stitch in this design is hand-positioned. Almost every fish scale in this design almost exactly matches the position of the scales in the original artwork. (About 10% of the smallest scales could not be duplicated.) Also, the colors are a very close match.
The special embroidery techniques used give realism and a nice depth to the design.
John researched the design, and digitized the fish. Beth created the pillow design. She uses great computerized embroidery and sewing machines for the bulk of the work, then hand sews the final side shut.
This design would be great for totes, bags, purses, pillows and sweatshirts. Would you like this fish on a custom order sweatshirt? Just let us know.
(The fourth photo, of the back of the pillow is a little over-exposed. It makes the brown look somewhat like the color of copper. You can see some of the back panel in the fifth photo. That brown is close to the actual color.)
