Navy Blue “Hummingbirds in Love” Pillow
This is a one-of-a-kind custom accent pillow. The design has an elegant feel. It has two hummingbirds touching their beaks.
These birds are from third volume of John Gould's five volume book, “A Monograph of the Trochilidae,” or, the family of hummingbirds — Image 200. John Gould was a famous ornithologist that lived from 1804 to 1881. This book of his was published in 1861 and is now in the public domain.
This particular type of hummingbird is called, “Spathura Peruana,” or “Peruvian Spatuletail.” Spathura is derived from spatula — as the male's longest tail feathers look like spatulas. Peruana is derived from Peru. This is a rare hummingbird from Peru. In real life the male grow to 5 inches long — and the female about 3.25 inches long. In this design, he is about 4.25 inches long — and she is about 3.25 inches long.
The plant is an interesting cactus native to Peru — called Dalea. In Gould's design, the flowers are blue. (That is why we used blue.) It is more common that they are magenta or purple. During his research John also found the flowers in white or yellow. If you would like to place a custom order with this design, you might wish to consider, blue, magenta, purple, white or yellow flowers on your design.
John researched the design, and Beth created the pillow design. This is our first item with this design. Beth uses great computerized embroidery and sewing machines for the bulk of the work, then hand sews the final side shut. The fabric has a soft, smooth feel.
The pillow size is approximately 12″ x 16″ x 4″. Inside there is a new, soft pillow insert.
It has an off-white front center panel. Sometimes, this color is referred to as “egg shell.” It has a high quality navy fabric on the side panels and on the back. In the third photo — of the back of the pillow — the image is slightly over-exposed so you can see the pattern in the fabric. The navy color in the third image is too light because of this. In the second image — of the design — the background white is also slightly over-exposed to allow you to see the details of the design better. The first and fourth image give a good idea of how dark the navy blue is and how “white” the white is.
